4th of July response
I think he spends much of his time on the topics that do not need to be argued because it gives the reader another side of the story. It gives them something to compare his arguments to, so it is not just him telling his audience what he thinks. These points also make his essay better because he is able to give good counter arguments towards those topics that do not need to be argued.

I completely agree with what you said about giving a different, indirect apprach of argument by giving descriptions of the awful things that used to go on. It is also very ironic that he is writing so eloquently, when he says himself that black people are not educated in reading and writing.
