Marine Corps

I think the Marine Corps made that site to get more people to join the Marines. They showed all the positive things you can get and achieve if you sign up and join. They don't really show any negative things because people would probably end up not joining. They hope that if younger people see all these positive things, they'll wanna join.

Since the draft no longer exists, the United States Armed Forces need to develop ways to attract members. One of those ways, as this site portrays, is to appeal to the people who want a disciplined life style. By showing pictures of the work being put in, and the teamwork that the marines show, it is an incredibly persuasive page. It is so appealing that if it were not for the war in Iraq, I may be considering a future in the Marines.
The Marines designed their website a certain style that appeals to those seeking information. They designed it for those are "seeking challenges......and sucess" and be appealing to those they displayed the photo above of a rigid man in combat who is determined and concentrated, a great example of a marine that appeases to the eye. They even made the information right to the point instead of a lengthy essay which would deter someone from reading, short and simple gets the point across. And lets not forget the obvious propaganda Question to the left "when i see the marines, i see confidence and strength. can I become like that".

The web site was designed in this way because the army actually wants people to join. If you wanted someone to buy a sofa you wouldn't tell them it will wear out in a year, you would tell them it is comfortable and will inhance the user's life. Likewise, the army focuses on the positive aspects of the military: success, feelings of accomplishment, as opposed to the negative aspects: hardships or even death. The military is trying to sell something just like a couch salesman. It's a very old tactic.

I think that the Marine Corps formated their website as they did because they knew that it would be more appealing to those seeking information about the Marine Corps. The creators of the website know that the idea of opening opportunities for oneself is much more appealing than pointing out that their main cause is to fight. If people were aware that the actual reason they were there was to fight and possibly die and not improve themselves, then they wouldn't be so quick to enlist. Those who base their decision to enlist just based on this website do not take the entire situation into account. This website seems to act as a "white lie" and somewhat mislead people into enlisting.
