Life Without Health Insurance

Meredith Clark makes a great claim in her article "Life Without Health Insurance" about how people between the ages of 18 to 25 do not have life insurance. However, Clark's claim in this article has been stated by many other people. What makes Clark's article unique is the fact that she isn't strictly using statistics, she is speaking out of personal experience. Clark has had her own health problems when she was uninsured. Clark's knowledge on the topic comes from personal experience and therefore makes the article more personal and a lot more informative.

Life without health insurance

In the article Life without Health Insurance Clark does a very good job of giving her point of views about the issue. In a lot of debatable topics, people will either just stick to strictly statistics to prove their points, and other will just use their personal experiences to try and get through to the reader. In this article however, Clark uses statistics and her personal experiences, which makes it a lot more believable to the reader. We as the reader feel much more connected to the situation Clark is talking about and find it easier to believe what she is saying because she has provided statistics and her personal experience.

Her personal experience adds a lot more credibility to this debate. It is one thing for someone to speak on an issue that they believe in, and another thing for someone to speak on an issue that they believe in and have been through. This testimony helps to bring new light onto the situation because she is giving a first hand account of how health insurance has effected her life. People who read this article are more inclined to believe what she is saying because she has gone thought . I think that this testimony was a good addition to the article and makes the argument more valid.

By Clark giving her own personal experience about the situation helps us put it in perspective. Reading a story is one thing, but giving an example opens up many new doors. We as the reader can relate to what she has to say. It would also help people become more aware of the statistics because no one is a superhero and everyone has the potential to get sick or injured whether they like it or not. She hit the mark as a writer because without her personal example the essay would just be a little off the mark.

Health Insurance

I think that Clark gives her personal experience along with the statics because it it gives the reader a first hand example that any one can become part of those simple, commonly over looked numbers. She makes the reader feel that health insurance is very important because she gives the affects of what happen to her just from getting a mild illness. Her personal experience also makes the reader more willing to agree with her position if the reader can connect with what the author is saying.

I think Clark adding her own experience makes the article more clear to the readers. It shows the readers that is can happen to anyone and can happen when you don't expect it. If she would just put the stats in the article and not put her own experience in it, the article could become boring to some people and they might believe that they won't get sick without insurance.

Clark's personal experience definately adds validity to the issue. When you read statistics and cold numbers, it is easy to ignore them. It's very easy to say, "That will never happen to me." or to just brush it off as propoganda. When a real person tells a real story, however, it makes the issue come alive. Suddenly we put ourselves in there shoes and everything is much more believable. Clark's personal experience definately helps the article.

Response to Clark article

Clark adds her personal experience into this article to give her readers a firsthand example of how not having insurance can effect someone financially and emotionally. It is a more personal message than simply listing facts and statistics. It gives the audience an insight into the real situation and what is really happening regarding the topic of insurance. It also makes the argument more believable because the readers can actually see how unexpected circumstances can effect someone who does not have insurance.
