Interstate System-Tim Fisher

Nixon presents his audience with facts regarding the current state of the American roadways. He states that many of these roadways remain unchanged from the days that they were used as cattle trails or indian trails. And as our country continued to build more and more automobiles, 56 million at that time, a need for more, and more advanced roadways had come along. By putting a 50 billion dollar highway program into effect, President Eisenhower and Nixon hoped that many of the problems that had been plaguing the country due to poor roadways could be solved. Problems such as the annual wastage of billions of hours in detours, and traffic jams. Also they hoped that all the civil suits that clog up the courts could be cleaned out. It was believed that at that time more than half had their origins on highways, roads, and streets.
